ERI energy saving tips
- Turn off all non-essential appliances at night before you go to bed
- Power down computers when finished - computers and attached devices use surprisingly large amounts of electricity
- Reduce the use of external lighting - typical flood lights consume lots of power
- Always turn off immersion heaters when finished and just use the "sink" setting for showers
- Use a microwave for heating up food
- Use a clothes line rather than a dryer
- Get used to turning off lights when you leave a room
- Change your bulbs to CFLs. These have reduced in price considerably over the past few years
- Keep internal doors closed to minimize draughts
- Only boil the amount of water that you need
- Keep covers on pots and saucepans when cooking and turn down the heat
- Try to use recipes that require fewer heat sources, e.g one pot casseroles
- If using a dishwasher, always make sure it is full before switching it on
