Solar
![]() |
Solar energy is radiant energy that is produced by the sun. Every day the sun radiates, or sends out, an enormous amount of energy. Daily solar irradiation in Ireland is between 2.6 and 3 kWh/m2 – the same as Paris. It is the equivalent of more than 100 litres of oil per m2 per year or 420 times Ireland’s total annual energy consumption. |
A solar collector is one way to collect heat from the sun. A solar panel can be installed on virtually any house and will pay for itself over a short period of time. Solar thermal water heating can provide up to 70% of the annual domestic hot water requirement.
Solar Thermal Applications
- Domestic hot water heating
- Hotels/B&B’s
- Swimming Pools
- Leisure and sports facilities
- Car Washing
Design Considerations
- Daily hot water consumption
- Annual hot water consumption
- Geographical location
- Orientation of proposed panel
- Mounting angle
- Type of collector (vacuum tube/flat plate)
- Efficiency of collector
A solar thermal water heating system will give any building a higher energy rating, a higher sale value and a smaller carbon footprint.
